Excellent: Five exhibitors receive the expoSE/expoDirekt Innovation Award 2025

Bruchsal, November 13, 2025. Five exhibitors will be awarded the expoSE or expoDirekt Innovation Prize 2025 for their innovative products at the trade fair duo on November 19, 2025. An independent expert jury evaluated 37 submissions based on criteria such as the degree of novelty, user benefits, and economic success. The award-winning products simplify the daily work of asparagus and/or berry growers, save time and money, and also prioritize sustainability.

The winners of the expoSE innovation awards:

Ant Robotics from Stelle:
VALERA Cube – Autonomous tunnel sprayer for professional use
The VALERA Cube spraying robot was developed for protected cultivation and specifically for use in raised beds. It can treat three to seven rows simultaneously and features two large tanks for extended operating time. Powered by solar energy, it achieves a long range and operates completely autonomously across the entire site. Within tunnels, the VALERA Cube navigates with sensor-based precision – even at night – reliably detecting obstacles and automatically stopping or navigating around them.
The VALERA Cube can be accessed at any time via an app. The system detects when a tank is empty and resumes its mission from the exact same spot after refilling. GPS data and information on the sprays used are also available in machine-readable format. This means the VALERA Cube already meets the requirements for the digital documentation of plant protection measures, which will become mandatory from 2026. Bioline AgroSciences from Essex - Little Clacton (UK)
Sprayvent – Precision sprayer for the application of beneficial insects without scattering or spillage losses
Bioline Agrosciences launched its new precision sprayer for predatory mites, Sprayvent, in 2025. According to the manufacturer, it is the world's first system specifically designed for the precise and effective spraying of predatory mites. Phytoseiulus persimilis Developed in liquid form, the sprayer combines a patented process for the safe transfer of predatory mites and other beneficial insects into a liquid phase using a novel liquid formulation. This formulation keeps mites (as well as eggs, pupae, and nematodes) suspended in the tank, preventing them from settling. Furthermore, the patented nozzle precisely, gently, and effectively sprays the liquid predatory mite formulation onto plants. It offers an effective, uniform, and powerful application method for predatory mites, saving gardeners time and money while conserving resources. Voltiris from Epalinges (Switzerland):
Solar modules with solar filter technology for larger fruits and higher yields
Voltiris, in collaboration with 3M, has developed modules that use a special filter which allows the light necessary for strawberry growth to pass through while simultaneously converting unwanted heat into renewable energy. This means plants that are up to 5°C cooler and larger strawberries – and at the same time, renewable energy is generated directly in the greenhouse.
Preliminary trial results show promising effects: the largest berries are up to 22% larger, total yields increase slightly, and fruit drop is reduced by about half. Leaf temperatures were measured to be up to 5°C lower, which led to larger fruit. Further information is available at expoSE in Hall 2, Booth K12. https://voltiris.com

The winners of the expoDirekt innovation awards:

FrachtPilot from Münster in cooperation with FlexFleet Solutions:
Digital control center for harvest and sales stands
FrachtPilot presents a fully digital control center for direct marketers: Harvest and working time recording, decentralized warehouse management, allocation to sales stands, route planning, and seamless batch tracking are all integrated. The new sales stand management system provides accurate, real-time inventory and sales figures, calculates replenishment recommendations (including route reference), and offers analyses of sales, product performance, and loss risks. A live dashboard highlights bottlenecks and top sellers and prioritizes replenishments – ideal for seasonal peaks and decentralized teams (farm shops, market stalls, and strawberry/asparagus stands). The solution is cloud-based, ready to use immediately, and integrated into the FrachtPilot suite. Further information is available at expoDirekt in Hall 1, Booth B11, and test access is available via [link/website/etc.]. www.frachtpilot.de/verkaufsstand-verwaltung

NonStop Shop from Meppen:
Calibrated scale in the vending machine for gram-accurate billing
NonStop Shop's calibrated scale weighs the contents of each of its 430 product trays immediately before dispensing. This means that loose goods like strawberries, asparagus, or meat don't need to be weighed manually beforehand. Furthermore, even chilled products experience evaporation losses, which can be significant, especially with berries and asparagus. For example, to give a customer 500 grams of strawberries, an additional 8-12 grams must be factored in. The scale eliminates these losses. Customers and operators are billed to the gram. Further information is available at expoDirekt in Hall 1, Booth D20. www.nonstop-shop.de

2nd Stone Fruit Forum as part of expoSE on 19 November 2025 at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre

Different cultivation systems and frost protection measures in fruit growing

1st Stone Fruit Forum - Photo: VSSE eV / Jürgen Rösner

Bruchsal, October 20, 2025. On the first day of the expoSE 2025 trade fair, the Stone Fruit Forum will offer expert presentations on cherry cultivation systems, comparing their advantages and disadvantages, the Drapeau system with its limitations and possibilities, and frost protection with an overview of the most interesting applications currently available.

For the second time, the Association of South German Asparagus and Strawberry Growers (VSSE) is organizing the Stone Fruit Forum as part of the expoSE trade fair with VSSE board member Dominic Ell, berry and stone fruit producer from Beerenhof Ell in Oberkirch, and co-organizer Herbert Knuppen.

The Stone Fruit Forum will take place on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, from 10:12.30 a.m. to 4:5 p.m. in the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Conference Center, Conference Room XNUMX/XNUMX. The following topics are on the agenda:

Many large cherries from narrow trees – advantages and disadvantages of cultivation systems in comparison

The trend toward large, firm cherries continues unabated. In anticipation of higher prices, various cultivation methods have emerged in recent years. The availability of new variety-rootstock combinations expanded the range of fruit sizes. Tree training plays a key role in maintaining, or perhaps even improving, this level. But which cultivation system has proven successful? "There's no general answer to this question," explains Peter Hilsendegen, stone fruit consultant at the Rural Services Center (DLR) in the Rheinpfalz region. "But we see that, in addition to a sufficient supply of water, nutrients, and warmth during the cell division phase in the first few weeks after flowering, tree training, in particular, can be used by fruit growers as a tool to improve fruit size." However, it should be noted that the yield reliability made possible by the high productivity of the new variety-rootstock combinations also has a downside: high fruit set and weaker growth can easily impair fruit size development. This effect can be further amplified if the same area is used for several successive tree generations, as is increasingly the case in protected cultivation with roofing or netting systems. At the 2nd Stone Fruit Forum in Karlsruhe, Peter Hilsendegen will present his new findings on the various cultivation systems.

Drapeau system in fruit growing proves successful

The Drapeau pruning system for stone fruit is a pruning and cultivation system that has proven successful in Switzerland for years. This cultivation and pruning system is also gaining increasing acceptance among fruit growers in Germany. Along with the advantages, such as better growth distribution due to the sloped vine, less overcrowding, and better picking performance, there are also disadvantages that must be considered. Stone fruit consultant Othmar Eicher from Switzerland shares his many years of experience to better understand and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the system.

Frost protection measures in fruit growing are essential – new test results

"Frost protection in fruit is becoming increasingly important, as the investment in a system is increasing," explains Alexander Zimmermann of the Bavarian State Research Center for Viticulture and Horticulture (LWG). "Frost protection is an absolute must." In its trials, the LWG has already tested and evaluated numerous devices and measures to mitigate late frost damage in fruit and wine growing. In his presentation, Alexander Zimmermann will provide an overview of the current status of active and passive frost protection measures and present the latest test results.

A general distinction is made between radiation frost and wind frost. Radiation frost usually occurs differently locally and is particularly noticeable in valleys. While the air near the ground is normally warmer than the layers above, this is reversed on cold, frosty nights. Without a protective layer of clouds, the warm air rising from the ground can escape. At the same time, cold air flows from the higher elevations into the valley. This creates an inversion layer, in which temperatures are very cold near the ground and significantly warmer air masses lie a few meters above. In this situation, there is no air exchange by wind because the cold, heavier air masses lie beneath lighter, warm air layers. This leads to the dreaded late frost damage, usually in depressions or areas of accumulation.

Wind frosts, on the other hand, can cause damage to an entire growing region and are in most cases more difficult to prevent. Due to global warming, winters and springs in many regions of Germany and Europe have been milder than the long-term average in recent years. This allows woody plants to sprout and bloom earlier in late winter or spring. However, frosts in April and May continue to occur at regular intervals. The early growth period thus prolongs or even increases the risk of late frost in fruit crops.

According to the manufacturer, this combination creates the basis for healthy plant development, high yields, and maximum profitability in strawberry cultivation – both in the open field and in protected tunnel cultivation.
In open-field strawberry cultivation, the system ensures stable ridges even during heavy rainfall, thus reducing the risk of erosion and soil compaction. According to the manufacturer, it offers excellent climate control for tunnel cultivation through the choice of film color and material, thus reducing frost and heat damage. The system replaces herbicides, reduces water consumption, and enables long-term resource conservation through the reusability of the materials. www.4disc.de

Harlander Landtechnik from Aresing – Hall 1, Stand: E20
Special three-stage rotor for asparagus bed cutter

Asparagus bed cultivators equipped with three-stage rotors can be used in a variety of soil types. Bed cultivators are possible in all common soil types. A three-stage rotor enables even cultivation while reducing effort. The finer cultivation loosens the soil better and remains less compacted.
Because the rotor distributes the work across multiple stages, the load on each individual cutter is reduced. This leads to less wear and tear and increases the service life of the cutter. Gradually cultivating the soil reduces the thickness of the removed material. This results in more even material removal and creates an asparagus bed with a loose, crumbly core. The more efficient operation of the three-stage rotor reduces energy consumption and contributes to lower operating costs. www.harlander-landtechnik.de

HMF Hermeler Maschinenbau from Sassenberg-Füchtorf – Hall 2, Stand: K11
Cabbage cutter with innovative developments

To combat asparagus fly and fungal infestation, the asparagus leaves are removed from the ridges in the fall. The newly developed BÜFFEL leaf cutter was already presented to interested trade fair visitors at expoSE 2024. This year, however, it features the following improvements:
1. Front or rear attachment is possible thanks to the integration of two three-point frames. This makes the application and combination options flexible, even with other tillage machines to minimize work steps.
2. Hydraulic drive of the blade discs with variable direction of rotation, so that possible blockages from plant residues can be easily removed by changing the direction of rotation.
3. A wedge, positioned centrally between the two hydraulically operated cutting discs, distributes the asparagus tops and soil material to the sides of the ridge. This wedge-shaped distribution body is adjustable in both height and inclination to ensure optimal alignment with the ridge. It prevents the tops or other soil material from accumulating on the ridge and facilitates the collection of the tops.

NonStop Shop from Meppen – Hall 1, Stand: D20
Calibrated scale in the vending machine for gram-accurate billing

NonStop Shop's calibrated scale weighs each of the 430 product trays immediately before serving, upon request. This means that loose items such as strawberries, asparagus, or meat do not need to be weighed by hand beforehand. Furthermore, even with refrigerated products, evaporation losses occur. These can be significant, especially with berries and asparagus. For example, to give a customer 500 grams of strawberries, an additional 8-12 grams must be calculated and thus "given away." These losses are eliminated with the scale. Billing is accurate to the gram for both the customer and the operator. www.nonstop-shop.de

Trade fair duo expoSE & expoDirekt from 19 to 20.11.2025 November XNUMX at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre

Third Berry Technology Forum as part of expoSE – Europe's leading trade fair for asparagus and berry cultivation

Key Visual Berry Technology Forum

Bruchsal, 29 September 2025. The third edition of the Berry Technology Forum will take place on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 9:45 a.m. to approximately 1:30 p.m. as part of expoSE in the conference hall of the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Center. Organizers are Marco Joseph and the Association of Southern German Asparagus and Strawberry Growers (VSSE).

Topics of the Berry Technology Forum include choosing the right growing substrate for successful berry fruit production, AI-controlled drain monitoring, the appropriate greenhouse for optimal cultivation, the effect of sunlight on plants as a production factor in polytunnels and greenhouses, sustainable energy supply and simultaneous increase in berry size, and the path from open field to hydroponic cultivation.

Jiffy: “Choosing the right growing medium for successful soft fruit production”

Soft fruit is sensitive to changing conditions, so understanding the water-air ratio in its root zone is crucial. With existing irrigation control tools and the expertise of Jiffy, a manufacturer of growing media, maximum yields can be achieved more easily. During the presentation, Arjan van Leest, Jiffy, will address the correct selection of stable organic components in combination with some promising renewable alternatives.

Wolky Tolky: “How AI-driven drain monitoring brings data to life”

Climate, irrigation, nutrients, and plants in a single cycle: Monitoring reveals when the plant is actually growing. This knowledge allows gardeners to specifically influence the entire cycle and plant development – from water management to yield. Yannick Smedts, WolkyTolky, presents ways to better understand plants.

Richel Group: “It’s not the crop that has to fit the greenhouse, but the greenhouse that has to fit the crop.”

In his presentation, Matthieu Lerch, Richel, will compare polytunnels and the Venlo construction method, discussing the differences between the two. He will provide a brief overview of which construction method, in his opinion, creates the best conditions. Suitable conditions provide the opportunity to optimize crop management, plant health, yield, and quality.

Lumiforte: “Sunlight & heat under control – optimal yields in greenhouses and polytunnels”

The solar spectrum consists of three main components – UV, PAR and IR:
• UV strengthens the plant, can reduce fungal spores and influences leaf area, color and elongation.
• PAR includes light-active colors that together drive photosynthesis and individually trigger reactions such as compactness or fruit formation.
• IR brings heat – too much of it causes stress, closes stomata and can lead to damage such as burnt leaves or poor fruit quality.
Coatings on glass and film surfaces are an important tool: They influence the light before it reaches the plant. The goal is a high PAR and low IR component. Balance is crucial – with the right strategy, the plant remains productive longer, forms heavier fruit, and improves shelf life.

Voltiris: “A single solution that provides greenhouses with sustainable energy while increasing berry size.”

Alja van der Schuren, Voltiris, presents an innovative solar filter technology. Developed in collaboration with 3M, the Voltiris modules use a special filter that allows the light needed for plant growth to pass through while converting unwanted heat into clean, renewable electricity. This results in plants that are up to 5°C cooler and berries that are larger – while simultaneously generating renewable energy directly in the greenhouse. The system can be seamlessly retrofitted into existing greenhouses.

Priva: "What will be your next step in berry cultivation? – From open field to hydroponic cultivation to LED lighting"

A changing world brings with it new opportunities and challenges. Climate, water, personnel, quality, and planning: the demands on berry growers are becoming ever greater. There's a technical solution for almost every situation. But then, a lot lies ahead for berry growers. Is it feasible? What options are available? What's important about hydroponics? There's a new step to take for everyone. In this presentation, Dennis de Wit, Priva Horticulture, aims to inspire for tomorrow and the future beyond.

This year's focus is on "Innovative and Smart Selling." Practitioners will share how they are using smart solutions to innovate their marketing and the importance of store design in this process. The respective providers will present their concepts in an industry discussion.
Another topic is artificial intelligence. It can relieve companies of a lot of work in sales and marketing.
